In 2000, four pastured poultry producers in Pennsyvania were awarded a grant, partially funded by the USDA, to have the nutritional content of their pastured poultry products tested by American Westech, Inc out of Harrisburg Pennsylvania. A nutritional analysis was also performed of a standard "store bought" chicken produced in a more conventionally raised, CAFO (confined animal feeding operation) type of system. The nutritional comparison is shown below. You will notice the significantly higher levels of Vitamin A in the pasture raised bird, but it is important to note that the majority of this increased Vitamin A was located in the skin, so make sure you consume as much of the skin from our pastured poultry as possible! Pasture raised chicken was also found to have less saturated and mono-unsaturated (the bad) fats as well, with a much better ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3. To read the study, click here
